Tell us about something special from your youth.

I grew up in a tight-knit neighborhood. There were a group of six boys around the same age, and we got together every day after school to play baseball, soccer, and various games we made up. We would break for dinner with our families, then meet back up again and continue to play until dark. I am still close to most of the guys to this day.

Share an interesting story about your family.

We recently took a trip to Banff National Park in Canada with my family. I convinced my family to save money on the trip by staying in a hostel for a week, and I was admittedly nervous about how it would go for everyone. My mom made a friend right away and ended up loving the experience! We spent the week hiking through the mountains, my brother and I jumped into a frigid lake in the middle of nowhere, and we spent a good amount of time planning for a bear encounter that never happened. We even spent $40 on bear spray just in case!

Where have you worked? What is the best thing that has ever happened while you were working?

I worked on a dairy farm in high school. A friend and I were moving about 200 cows from one stall to another and about 50 of them got out! Picture me running around trying to keep them from actually running away while my coworker tried to corral them with the Bobcat – it wasn’t the best day on the job at the time but in hindsight has become one of my funniest memories!

When did you first realize you were interested in finance?

As a kid I was always a big saver. I planned a saving and spending budget with my very first allowance, and I mapped out how much I would have after 10 years if I stuck to my plan. Most of my role models growing up happened to be financial advisors, so it was a constant theme in my life. I liked the presence they had in people’s lives and I could see real meaning in helping people with something so important to them. I always had my sights set on being a financial advisor myself one day.

What are you known for among your friends?

I’m known for eating healthy – my friends like to poke fun at how committed I am to it. I’m also creative – I always find new ways to have fun and I love creating exciting new traditions with my family and friends.

Do you have any unique hobbies?

A bit of a story behind this one…I was in New York City for a finance conference in college and I decided I wanted to take a dance class in a NYC Studio (despite having never taken a dance class in my life). I snuck off one night and took a subway to the best dance studio in the city. It struck me that everyone was 100% their youngest, freest selves, and no one cared what anyone else thought. I knew I had to bring this back to my school – college students are so stressed all the time! So I started a small weekly dance gathering. It turned into about 40 students who would come every week and considered the group their family. When people were stressed, anxious, depressed, etc – it was a safe and healing place for them. And it brought joy every single week. Truly one of the most rewarding things I have been a part of and I still dance to this day because of the profound impact that group had on my college experience.

What is your favorite part of what you do at Vestia?

I love our collaborative team environment. A lot of business is transactional, but we serve people through their entire lives to help them achieve their long term vision. And we have such a holistic view of their lives that we know how to be relevant no matter what life brings.

What book do you always tell people they should read? Why?

The Millionaire Next Door – A lot of the people you think would be millionaires are actually just trying to “keep up with the Joneses” and more often than not the real millionaires are people who made moderate salaries over a long career and saved well. Ultimately if you live beneath your means and realize that money isn’t the driver of happiness, anyone can become a millionaire.

One of Vestia’s values is to model “wealth that matters.” What does this mean to you?

It’s about striking a balance. If you value money too much, then you lose out on time with family and friends and other things that are truly important. But if you are too loose with money, you may get down the line and realize you don’t have enough to enjoy what you worked so hard for.

There is freedom in not being a slave to money. Have a budget and a strategy in place to be sure you are giving yourself the best chance at a future that is regret free and worry free. You will be able to spend your retirement in a way that is so much more rewarding for you and your family because you had a strategy in place early.
