A graphic designer by training, Krystal has vast professional experience providing creative support to financial services firms such as Orion and TD Ameritrade before joining Vestia. Krystal provides the strategic direction and creative vision necessary to deliver timely, relevant, and actionable financial content to physicians nationwide. She also supports the work of our advisors by creating marketing collateral for numerous physician financial courses and seminars throughout each year. Vestia can bring incredible value to a physician’s financial life, and Krystal finds great joy in creating content where Vestia’s value shines.
Krystal holds an Associates Degree in Graphic Communication Arts from Metropolitan Community College in Omaha, Nebraska. She now gives her time back to the school as an adjunct instructor in graphic design, and she loves getting to mentor students and cheer them on in their own design journeys. Krystal and her husband, Ryan, have two young children, so their time outside of work is filled with hours of dance, soccer, baseball, and lots of coffee to get them through it all! She loves gardening and would love to create a Monty Don worthy garden someday.
Tell us about something special from your youth.
My mom started a 4-H group for our neighborhood, so I spent the summers sewing, crafting, growing plants, and learning to bake. I had no idea at the time how many valuable life skills I was learning. It was for sure a clever way to motivate kids to do quality work and we had so much fun doing it!
Share an interesting story about your family.
Our family started looking for some acreage a few years ago and stumbled upon a Christmas Tree farm for sale. We bought it! My husband and I both grew up in the city - so it’s been hilarious fun learning about farm life and running the tree farm and caring for an assortment of critters including two milk cows, chickens, a pig named Bennie - and his support group - the Jets (3 ducks). Our family has loved being part of the Christmas traditions of lots of families that come to get their tree from our farm.
Where have you worked? What is the best thing that has ever happened while you were working?
I’ve worked for several design agencies focusing on Medical and Financial clients (TD Ameritrade, Orion, East Texas Medical Center). One of my first jobs was doing bio sheets for doctors. I also teach design and branding at a local community college. The very best thing about the jobs that I’ve had is the people I’ve worked with. It does sound cheesy and cliche, but I’ve made some really good friends along the way and it’s amazing how they have woven in and out of my life. I love it when our paths cross again.
When did you first realize you were interested in finance?
My mom loved to find ways to weave education into practical life stuff. One week we had a mortgage amount on our huge whiteboard and figured out the amortization calculations for fun. All week my brother and I would work on it - it was fascinating. My parents also had a goal to pay their house off early and talked about the benefit of paying extra on the principal rather than just making an extra payment. I watched them pay off their house in half the time of their loan. I love being a part of a team that truly makes a difference in the financial lives of their clients!
What is the most important thing you have learned about helping other people?
To quote a good friend: “Life is a rich tapestry.” Each year I learn how much I don’t know, which actually excites me. Continual growth is essential to be able to help others effectively. Listening and asking good questions are key tools.
What are you known for among your friends?
It could be my deep and everlasting appreciation of a good croissant or children’s picture books. I will talk to you for hours about either.
What is your favorite part of what you do at Vestia?
I love helping Vestia’s value shine. I did freelance work for Vestia for years before I officially joined the team. I had to intentionally dial back my enthusiasm when I talked with people about how much I love Vestia because it was that over the top. As our Marketing Specialist, I have the joy of making communication as clear and helpful as possible and promoting a company I wholeheartedly value.
How do you spend your time outside of work?
Every chance I can talk my kids and husband into it - hiking is where I will be. It’s the best combo of two of my favorite things. I also mow a lot. Our 21 acres farm allows for a lot of outdoor time.
What book do you always tell people they should read? Why?
I’m currently reading The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by John Mark Comer. It’s challenging me to think critically about my yeses, and healthy practices to avoid burnout. I can’t resist sharing a favorite picture book as well. Me and Mom by Cozbi A. Carera is a magic blend of story and illustration and a favorite library pick for both me and my daughter, Rosie. Parents - you know a joint favorite is hard to find!
One of Vestia’s values is to model “wealth that matters.” What does this mean to you?
We lost my husband’s mom to ALS years ago- she had just barely transitioned into retirement. That impacted how we view our time and priorities. I’m so glad she had adventures and spent time with the people she loved. To me, Wealth that Matters means clarifying my values and goals and living a life that is in alignment with those priorities. It’s remembering to laugh and be silly with my kids and spend lots of time with our favorite people while also working hard. I can’t believe how fast our kids are growing up and investing in and for them is one of my greatest joys.
