Andy brings a strong background in portfolio management and financial planning to his role at Vestia. He meets many professionals whose financial blueprints are failing them because they focus on the wrong things. Andy takes a different approach by crafting a roadmap that prioritizes action in areas that are both important to the client and critical to the success of the overall plan. This serves as the foundation for a dynamic, long-term relationship.

A graduate of Marquette University with a Bachelor of Science in Finance, Andy began his career in institutional wealth management. The thrill of managing large amounts of money quickly gave way to a desire to invest in individual client relationships, which led him to personal wealth management. He now holds both his Chartered Financial Analyst and Certified Financial Planner designations, an elite combination of professional credentials held by few in the industry. This means Andy has completed advanced training in building robust financial plans, as well as in detailed investment analysis and portfolio construction. Andy crafts tax-efficient investment strategies essential for Vestia’s high caliber professionals. He ensures our planning and investment strategies are consistent with research, but also delivered in a way that fits each client.

Andy lives in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with his wife, Angie, and children, Kensley, Lainey, and Brooks. Outside of the office, he spends his time hanging out with family, reading and doing any type of outdoor activity. A native of northeast Wisconsin, he still enjoys getting back to cheer on the Packers and spend time at the family cabin in the Northwoods.

Tell us about something special from your youth.

For my tenth birthday, my dad took me to a Monday Night Football game at Lambeau Field. We had standardized testing at school the next day, so my teacher (who assumed we were all watching it on TV) told the class to go to bed at halftime, wake up early, and eat a good breakfast. The game went into overtime and the Packers won on a 53-yard field goal! After that we had a 45-minute drive home, so needless to say, I didn’t quite honor my teacher’s request to be in bed by halftime. As I look back now, the funny thing is that I remember the game and the time with my dad, but I have no idea how I did on the standardized test.

How did you decide to become an advisor?

I went to Marquette University for their one-of-a-kind applied investment program. The curriculum is designed to prepare students for a Wall Street-type job. At mutual funds or hedge funds, your clients are primarily large institutions, and you are many steps removed from individuals who might benefit from your work. That did not seem fulfilling to me long term. I decided to transition to personal wealth management, which focuses on much more than the numbers – it is about people’s dreams and goals.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

My favorite thing is that I have plenty of opportunities to help clients live “wealth that matters” and plan for the present. This job wouldn’t be very exciting if it were only about maximizing retirement savings, protecting assets, and developing strategies to be more tax efficient. That’s our bread and butter and we do those things really well, but our job as advisors has to go beyond that.

Here are two recent examples:>

  • • A radiologist received a job offer that was going to pay him an additional $90,000 per year. At first glance the large pay increase was very attractive, but he was going to move away from friends and family only to work additional hours at the new job. I helped him analyze the net impact of the salary increase and how that might affect some of his long-term goals. The extra income would have allowed him to retire two years earlier, but his family would have been giving up so many of the things they value most. He ended up keeping his current job after deciding that his family would be sacrificing too much for the extra income.
   
  • • A client asked me to help him understand the impact of additional work on his financial picture. He wasn’t sure if it was necessary to be working as much as he had been over the past five years. The extra shifts were taxing on his family and he had a strong desire to be home more if it was financially feasible. We worked to establish a baseline number of hours to cover spending needs and retirement savings. Now, if they want to save up for a vacation or other discretionary spending items, he can choose to work more than the baseline. It has allowed him to spend more time with his family unless there is an intentional desire to spend above that baseline. The best part about that extra time with family is that it is now spent guilt-free without the constant wonder of if he should be working more.
 

What is your favorite part of Vestia?

The great team we have assembled. We have so much talent at this company, but we also have incredible chemistry. We work really hard and have a ton of fun doing it. I know that everyone on this team has my back. Everyone feels an incredible burden to serve our clients to the best of our abilities. I love knowing that any client who chooses to work with Vestia will be well taken care of.

How do you spend your time outside of work?

Outside of work we have a ton of fun as a family. I have two young girls who love to be silly. We have a cabin in northern Wisconsin that we visit in all seasons. The TV only gets a few channels and cell reception isn’t great, so that’s our opportunity to create fun in unique ways. My girls love to hike, sled, swim, and dance on the boat while we blare the music.

I enjoy reading, although I can’t seem to fit it into my schedule at this stage of life. We enjoy great friendships with other families. Most have young kids like we do so it gets pretty crazy. We also like to travel – especially out west. We have friends that have moved to different parts of the country, so we are fortunate to have tour guides in many of the places we visit.

True wealth is about more than finances. What does it mean to you to live wealth beyond finances?

Living “wealth that matters” – this means a ton to me because I know firsthand that life can be cut short. My mother was diagnosed with cancer at 42 and passed away a little more than a year later. She provided an excellent model when it came to living life beyond finances by investing in relationships and impacting the lives of those around her. I also had a chance to watch my father through this time. He is 100 percent, without a doubt, the most positive person I know. Still to this day, I am encouraged by his ability to focus on others even after the future he envisioned with his wife was taken away.

Age 42 is in my not-so-distant future. Any hopes and dreams that money might help me achieve can be ripped away in an instant. Time is our most valuable resource and we need to recognize that we are building our legacies one day at a time. It’s easy with young children to yearn for that next stage and say, “I can’t wait until they are out of diapers” or “I can’t wait until I can communicate with them better”. I do my best to fight that. With 42 fast approaching, I can’t live life wishing for a better someday. I want to live in the moment, be truly present with the ones I love, and build into people and values that last beyond me.
